Qualities of Church Life

1 Peter 3.8
Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.

Peter has given specific instructions for different relationships, and in verse eight he wants all believers to have the following qualities: unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. You can read other scriptures where these virtues are also mentioned by Paul. Jesus has these attributes, and Jesus is the one who makes it possible for us to have these qualities through the Holy Spirit at work in us and through us.

Each of the explanations under the five qualities is from the NIV Life Application Study Bible. Do you see these qualities in our church? Peter sees these qualities in the church as a whole rather than in particular individuals.

Unity of mind
Live in harmony
Romans 12.16
Philippians 2.2
Pursuing the same goals

Sympathy
Romans 12.15
1 Corinthians 12.26
Being responsive to each other’s needs

Brotherly love
1 Thessalonians 4.9
Hebrews 13.1
Seeing and treating each other as brothers and sisters

A tender heart
Be compassionate
Colossians 3.12
Being affectionately sensitive and caring

A humble mind
Philippians 2.6-8
Being willing to encourage one another and rejoice in each other’s successes

How would the world respond if we as the church really lived out these qualities? Jesus said that people will know we are Christians by our love for one another. Do you ever alter your opinion to be unified with the church? When you hear of a fellow believer’s loss does the death affect you as well? Do you truly care about your brothers and sisters in Christ? Do you follow Jesus’ example of humility by placing other Christians’ good before your own?

Blessings,
Anna
