Husbands: Live Considerately with Your Wives

1 Peter 3.7
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

In this new era, husbands and wives may find themselves spending a lot more time together. With more time together, there is a potential for more conflict. If that is you right now, if you are struggling with your mate today, I encourage you, husbands, to really consider the words here of the Apostle Peter.

Peter asks husbands to live with their wives in an understanding way. Some of you may have heard of or even read the book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, and since this COVID-19 pandemic you have found that statement to be even more true for you and your wife. So, husband, how do you live with your wife in an understanding way? What if this is an opportunity to truly get to know your wife, to really know how she feels and what she is thinking, what her dreams and expectations are right now? The idea of knowledge that Peter is going for here could include any knowledge that is beneficial to the husband-wife relationship, knowledge of God’s purposes and principles for marriage, as well as calling for men to study their wives, get to know who they are as individuals, and to understand their strengths and weaknesses in the physical, emotional and spiritual realms of who they are.

Truly this is a lifelong pursuit that can only be realized with the help of the Holy Spirit. There is a part of man’s nature that is designed to conquer things. For men growing up, this meant winning at sports; as men enter adolescence and young adulthood, they transition to winning the heart of a young lady. After that many men turn to conquering jobs, careers and hobbies. What men fail to realize about their wives is they are not something to be conquered. They are vessels just like men with an eternal destiny, not something to be conquered. Men, all those nice things that you did to win the heart of your bride is in some ways still needed today. The word that I am suggesting today is “intentional.” I am sure to some degree you were intentional to court or date the woman who is now your wife. That intentionality must continue; that is the heart of what Peter is saying here to men. Men, you need to be intentional about making a study of your wife which will show honor to her.

One thing that the world needs desperately in our society today is men who will be intentional with their wives, and a result of that is also being intentional with one’s children. Children need to see their fathers be intentional with their mothers. Despite all the negatives that COVID-19 has brought to the world, one of the positives has been families being able to spend more time together. Since you have a little extra time on your hands these days, men, I challenge you to make a study of your wife; get to know who she truly is. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by.
