Christ Our Sure Foundation

1 Peter 2.4-6
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

In these verses Peter tells us that we as Christians must grow together, not just as individuals, but as living stones which when joined together with others become integral parts in God's building of a spiritual house.
An important element of becoming God’s spiritual house is the offering of ourselves as spiritual sacrifices. What is this all about? You may remember in the Old Testament that when sacrificing an animal according to God’s law, a priest would kill the animal, cut it in pieces, and place it on the altar. Sacrifice was important, but even in the Old Testament God made it clear that obedience from the heart was much more important. God wants us, His “holy priesthood,” to offer ourselves, not animals, as living and spiritual sacrifices—daily laying aside our own desires and following Him, putting all our energy and resources at His disposal and trusting Him to guide us.
With this in mind, Peter then portrays the church as a living, spiritual house with Christ as the foundation and cornerstone and each believer as a valuable element. The apostle Paul portrays the church as a body with Christ as the head and each believer as a contributing member (see Ephesians 4.15-16). Both pictures emphasize community. One stone is not a temple or even a wall; one body part is useless without the others. In our individualistic society, we can easily forget our interdependence with other Christians. When God calls you to a task, remember that He is also calling others to work with you. Together your individual efforts will be multiplied.
Today how can you offer yourself as a living sacrifice to God, and how can you contribute to the building of community at Bella Vista Community Church?
