Lift Up Your Eyes

Psalm 121
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

My alma mater Blue Mountain College begins each academic year as it has since its founding in 1873 with the reading of Psalm 121. Psalm 121 is a beautiful reminder of God’s presence with us no matter what we face on our journey. It was a traveling psalm sung by pilgrims on their journey up to the Temple at Jerusalem for the feasts. Our journey of life as Christians is certainly not always easy; however, we know we can lift our eyes to God. One who is traveling is certainly concerned about the journey. Whether the hills are part of the landscape or a good hiding place for robbers, the traveler knows that God who made the hills is the ultimate protector.

All of the imagery used reminds us that God protects us whether the danger we face is in regard to the daytime or the evening. God knows us and loves us. God leads us in the right path. Wherever you find yourself today on your journey, lift up your eyes to the Lord. The Lord protects you now and forever.

Blessings,
