The Lord Is My Light

Psalm 27.1
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

The Psalmist David proclaims that the Lord is my light, my salvation, and my stronghold. Notice the personal faith that is repeated. When we are confident in God as our light, our salvation, and our stronghold, we have nothing to fear.
Throughout the Bible light represents revelation, spiritual understanding, holiness, purity, goodness, etc. The psalmist literally says, “The Lord is my light.” The Gospel of John echoes that Jesus is the light. Light overcomes darkness and fear. The Lord is my salvation—the Lord is my Savior—the Lord delivers me—the Lord rescues me. The Lord is the stronghold of my life means the Lord is the refuge, or strength, of my life.
In his book Favorite Psalms, Selected and Expounded John R. W. Stott shares, “The Lord is my light, to guide me; my salvation, to deliver me; and the stronghold of my life, in whom I take refuge.”
As we face uncertainty and possibly even death, will you respond in faith or fear? Are you able to confess with the psalmist the Lord is my light, my salvation, and my strength today?
