Bearing Insults

1 Peter 4.12-16
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.

How should we deal with insults? Does Peter really mean we should give back blessings when we’re insulted? God turns everything upside down. Normally, if you receive an insult, revenge is in order, expected, and anticipated. People who fling an insult are daring you to punch back. God wants those insults received because of your allegiance to Him to witness to His grace and love. If you hit back, what’s so different about God? If you love back, perhaps the offender will wake up and realize that God really does make a difference.

When you take an insult for God and the fist clenches up, remember Peter. He would have hit back, too, before Jesus took charge of his life. But he grew stronger, sturdier, and more confident in God. You can respond the same way because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you!

Soli Deo Gloria,

Pastor Jeff
