Love, Now and Forever

1 Peter 1.22-25
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

Peter calls us to love one another because of our new life in Christ. We are new people because we have been given new life in Christ. We should not live in our old, selfish ways. We should follow Jesus’ example of sacrificial love. Do you love others with the type of love that only God can give you?

We received this new life in Christ upon our conversion when we were obedient to the truth of the Gospel in God’s Word. God’s Word is eternal. Peter quotes Isaiah 40.6, 8 in 1 Peter 1.24-25. We will die like grass and flowers die, but the Word of God lasts forever. As we learned in the song “Jesus Loves Me” from a very young age, “[We] are weak, but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so.” Isn’t it wonderful that God’s Word is everlasting, and we have eternal life as believers! As you think about your everyday life, are you a different person from the person you were before you knew Christ? How does your knowledge of Christ through His Word help you love others? Do you spend time focusing on what is eternal or on what is temporary?

Blessings,

Anna
